The mission of the Roanoke Public Library is to provide access to knowledge and information based upon funding provided by tax dollars collected and donations that will inform, educate, entertain and serve the Roanoke community.
Following are the continuing objectives for the Roanoke Public Library as established by the Roanoke Public Library Board of Trustees.
The objectives of the Library Board of Trustees are:
In order to meet these objectives, the following list of goals for the next five years are presented and adopted:
2008
A. Research & replace if needed main server.
B. Replace all chairs at meeting table.
C. Review nature of collection and weeding policy.
D. End capital projects funds tax and integrate into operating budget.
E. Develop funding plan for new library space.
F. Procure property for new library.
G. (Continue with) Complete cataloguing of existing collection.
H. Librarian complete MLS degree. Take grant writing workshop fall of 2008.
I. Research and implement easier system for patrons to make on-line materials
requests.
2009
A. Replace/upgrade one or two of six patron computers
B. Accumulate funds for library building
C. Develop architectural plans for library.
D. Complete cataloguing of entire collection.
E. Replace copy machine.
F. Replace circulation computer.
G. New carpet.
H. Work on larger grant to increase technology offerings.
2010
A. Replace/upgrade one of six patron computers.
B. Finalize architectural plans for new building.
C. Procure and install second new server.
D. Get new quality printer.
E. Consider adding additional computer terminals/work stations.
F. Increase programs offered including educational programs.
G. Improve and increase technology offered.
2011
A. Replace/upgrade one of six patron computers.
B. Build a new library.
C. Let bids for new library.
D. Hire additional staff member.
2012
A. Institute Young Adult Programs for ages 13-18
B. Purchase access to online databases for patron & staff usage
C. Upgrade automation system by adding more available services such as bettersearch capabilities.
D. Add e-books to collection
E. Move into new library facility.
F. Replace/upgrade one of six patron computers.
